The summer weather in South Florida is wildly unpredictable. Generally one can expect it to be hot [obviously], but we sometimes have days of relentless sunshine followed by sudden torrential downpours. Or hurricanes. (We don’t get “drizzle”. If it’s raining, you’ll notice; it’s typically blowing sideways.) When we photograph weddings in the summer in Florida we tend to go with the philosophy of, “Hey. You’ll say vows! And we’ll take photos. We’ll play the rest by ear.” As long as there’s an airtight rain plan (or better yet, plan everything inside), things usually work out well, and we’re always up for the challenge of working around less than ideal lighting and locations.
Of course it’s much easier for everyone involved if the weather can simply cooperate, at least at a few key moments.
Nicole + Sean’s wedding was beautifully orchestrated and organized, with backup plans for the predicted heavy thunderstorms and rain. Call it the luck of the Irish, call it divine intervention; the rain came, but only during opportune moments, almost as if Nicole arranged the weather patterns to coordinate with the rest of their day. We started the day at Juliet Salon, where Juliet Ciambrone and Nicole Greenhouse worked their magic (and it rained outside). The weather cleared up for a quick trip to Nicole’s parents’ home nearby, where everyone finished getting ready and hustled into the limo for the trip to the beautiful St. Edward Catholic Church on Palm Beach Island, where Nicole’s parents had their own wedding a few years back (and it rained outside). The weather cleared up with room to spare for us all to gather inside the church for the beautiful ceremony (yep, more rain, with thunder this time), and eased up for a few minutes so we could snap a couple of group photos in the courtyard before getting on the limo bus with the wedding party. (This time it didn’t just rain: there was also a tornado warning.) Once at the reception venue, the Gulfstream Bath + Tennis Club in Delray Beach, the weather cooperated long enough for photos on the boardwalk before the party got started upstairs. Amazingly enough we even managed to catch a beautiful sunset for a fleeting few moments as the sun ducked behind the building.
The rest of the night was a whirlwind of energetic dancing, complete with “Flat Cat” (an inside joke that we absolutely love even if we don’t fully understand the origins– see if you spot it in the dance photos), an enthusiastic evening of music by the talented band VoxBlu, and our favorite thing about photographing a wedding: the display of emotions that ranged from laughter to tears and everything in between.
We’re so happy to have worked with such a delightful couple, and we hope they have an unforgettable honeymoon! Thank you to everyone who made us feel like part of the party.
