And now for something completely different. As you may or may not have figured out already, we traveled for no reason other than fun and a love of adventure to Iceland last November. Why? Why not? It’s been on our bucket lists for years, and an insanely good deal on airfare and a hotel sealed the deal for us. While we eagerly awaited our departure date, Iceland seemed to pop up everywhere. Photographers we know and admire photographed clients there (we can’t wait to do that some day!), we watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and drooled over the incredible scenery, and friends mentioned in passing how much they wanted to go there some day. Every time a friend mentioned they wanted to go we eagerly shared our travel dates and encouraged them to join us for at least part of our trip. And suddenly someone said yes.
Thu Tran is a photographer in Atlanta; we met her four years ago at a huge photography convention in Las Vegas. (Part of what we love about going to conventions is how many awesome friends we make from around the country and around the world! Such a wonderful community.) We’ve remained in touch through Facebook and we were so excited when she said she and her boyfriend, Alek, were also planning a trip to Iceland, and that we’d overlap by a few days. We made plans to spend a day together, which turned into nearly three days together; a road tripping group that worked flawlessly and left us begging for more, with one certainty: we will travel again together, and hopefully soon!
We took turns taking photos of each other on the first day as we explored some of the southwest of Iceland, including the waterfalls Selandjafoss and Skogafoss, ending at the black beaches of Vik just before dusk. Thu had the foresight to bring along a packable wedding dress, which made for some gorgeous contrast against the lava sand! See a few of our favorites from the day below, and stay tuned for a personal blog post with photos of the Pogos traipsing around the incomparable Icelandic countryside very soon.
